My journey as an artist

Thanks for visiting my art blog. My name is Theresa Vestal. I have loved art and wanted to be an artist ever since the third grade.

I took some detours along the way in my life and pursued other creative activities such as homeschooling my 3 children for 8 years, teaching art to a class of 2nd through 6th graders for 5 years, quilting, calligraphy, and gardening. I also had a career as a Registered Nurse for 19 years. Always though I came back to fine art – usually drawing and I always knew I wanted to paint pictures one day.

When my youngest child went off to college it was finally time to concentrate on art which for me is a life calling rather than a hobby.

I learned watercolor on my own for a while until I realized my medium is oil painting. I worked on that independently until the spring of 2012 when I started learning under the direction of Joe Kronenberg- a Pacific Northwest Western and Wildlife artist. I spent a year learning to draw through a Charles Bargue based instructional program developed by Joe. (The album “Bargue Plate Drawings” contains assignments I did for that class.) At that time I also decided to learn portrait drawing and in the fall of 2013 I began learning to oil paint portraits. Currently I am continuing to develop my drawing skills while I also work on a series of oil painted studies of portraits by master oil painters such as William-Adolphe Bouguereau.

I am thankful for my teacher who can teach me all I need to know and for my husband Rick who recently told me, “You are doing what you are meant to do.” And most of all I am thankful to God for blessing me with the ability and desire to fulfill this dream of my life.
